Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and home to fantastic food and culture. There are myriads of museums, parks, and world famous sites that appeal to all ages. While the city’s infrastructure (i.e. métro, restaurants) is not particularly family friendly, the people are and help compensate for any deficiencies.
The things to do in Paris with kids vary widely. Paris has exceptional public parks with great playgrounds. Omnipresent crêperies that are sure to be appreciated by young travelers and their parents. Many museums and top attractions in Paris for families are stroller accessible; for preschoolers and older children they also often have special activities, workbooks or exhibits planned.
Paris is a city known for its fabulous food, and you will find a wide array of cuisines and restaurants. The Paris restaurant scene is booming, and you will find ‘Brasseries’ (traditional French diners) at almost every corner, along with independently owned cafés and restaurants. At busier intersections, you can find chain restaurants and fast food. All restaurants are non-smoking indoors and many have designated smoking areas at outside tables. In general, restaurants in Paris are baby and child friendly. There might not be much space to have your stroller at your table though, so be prepared to either fold it up or leave it wherever the waiter finds room for it.
One of the reasons Paris is so family-friendly is thanks to its wonderful access to outdoor spaces and vast number of activities to keep kids entertained. The cityscape is crisscrossed by wide boulevards and the beautiful River Seine. Paris is full of amazing art, designer boutiques, delicious cuisine and rich culture. It’s also home to world famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Gothic Notre-Dame cathedral.
There are public parks and gardens all throughout Paris and most have playgrounds. They will be busier on Wednesday afternoons, when French children don’t have school, as well as on weekends. They are open year-round and usually close at sunset. The two biggest parks are the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes on the west and east sides of Paris respectively.
Probably the best way to enjoy what Paris has to offer and take in the local culture is by simply strolling around outdoors. It can be very nice to stroll along the Seine on the quais which have now been closed to traffic and renovated with public spaces and cafés. During the summer, a section of the quais get converted into Paris Plage. Sand is shipped in to create a beachy feel, beach cafés with beach chairs are set up, various activities are organized for children with water play areas, pétanque areas and even a pool is set up along the river.
Walking along the Seine near Notre Dame is very pleasant. On Sundays, there are little stands selling different cheeses and other food, musicians playing lovely music, and artists selling beautiful art. During the holiday season, there is a little Christmas Market that has specialty items and food.
With so many things to do in Paris with kids, you’ll want to come back again and again with the whole family!
